The Project Launches New Public Health Procurement Guide and Catalog
USAID’s Public Health Procurement Guide and Product Catalog 2010 is now available for download. This annual publication consists of current contraceptive and condom ordering procedures for Missions and a catalog of condoms and contraceptives provided by USAID. It includes USAID contraceptive ordering procedures and guidance on how to use logistics data and forecasts to calculate contraceptive requirements.

HIV Test Kits and Nevirapine Added to the DTTU System in Zimbabwe
The Delivery Team Topping Up (DTTU) System was first implemented in late 2003 as the logistics system for condoms and contraceptives for the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council. In late 2007, a pilot was conducted to assess the feasibility of integrating rapid HIV test kits and nevirapine for prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) into the DTTU distribution system. Nigeria Develops Health Commodity Supply Chain Strategy
On April 16–17, in Abuja, Nigeria, the Supply Chain Management System (SCMS) and the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT sponsored a national workshop to develop a strategy for strengthening Nigeria’s health commodity supply chains. Seventy-five representatives and experts from government agencies, development partners, program implementers, and other health system stakeholders gathered to develop a comprehensive supply chain management system strategic plan that supports national health goals and program activities. Improving Malawi’s Health Commodity Supply Chain
“The cost per month for distributing commodities to all the districts in the southern region was about 65 million Malawi Kwacha (MK) per month,” explained Veronica Chipeta, resident logistics advisor (RLA) for the DELIVER project in Malawi. Dramatic Low-Cost Improvements Made to Central Warehouses in Ethiopia
It used to be that just two trucks could be loaded and unloaded at the central warehouses in Ethiopia each day. Warehouse staff often worked after hours during the week, skipped lunch, and then came back on the weekends. But now more than 10 trucks are loaded and unloaded each day—the difference being that the formerly crowded, poorly organized warehouses were completely revamped. And what was done, at a cost of only U.S. $7,000, was more than a simple face-lift.

Supply Chain Logistics Course Has Immediate Impact
"We started putting theories on the ground barely days after our arrival.....In the [quarterly logistics meeting], we agreed to integrate management of HIV test kits into the Ministry's logistics mainstream," commented course alumnus Sam Chirwa, senior logistics officer for the Malawi Ministry of Health. Developing a Computerized Integrated Management Information System in Mozambique
JSI/DELIVER, with funding from USAID/Mozambique, is working with the Central de Medicamentos e Artigos Médicos (CMAM) of the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Mozambique to improve CMAM’s ability to quantify, procure, and distribute medicines and medical supplies (including contraceptives) through the MOH’s supply chain.

The Tanzania Ministry of Health (MOH) is designing and will soon implement an integrated logistics system (ILS) for contraceptives, essential drugs, HIV/AIDS commodities, medical supplies, and other health commodities. DELIVER Resident Advisor Barry Chovitz is working on the design of the ILS and helping the Pharmaceutical Supply Unit of the MOH build organizational and individual capacity.

Uganda Develops Logistics Management Information System for ARV Drugs
In 2004 in Uganda, DELIVER assisted the Ministry of Health and the Joint Clinical Research Center to develop a new logistics management information system for the distribution of antiretroviral drugs. DELIVER and its partners developed new forms for use by health facilities to account for drugs dispensed and drugs held in storage and a monthly report form that will be used to calculate order quantities and monitor stock status.
