In the current environment of increasing demand and limited resources, it is imperative to have efficient management of health commodities. Without a reliable supply of contraceptives, a family planning program cannot serve its customers; without appropriate drugs, a tuberculosis program cannot offer treatment; and without an uninterrupted supply of antiretroviral drugs, an effective AIDS treatment program cannot continue.
To improve the management, the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT and PRISMA, a Peruvian nongovernmental organization, offer comprehensive courses on supply chain management topics. As the project develops its relationship with additional institutions, we will offer courses in other regions throughout the world.
The current courses include—
Overview of Supply Chain Management
The goal of this introductory course is to increase participants’ understanding of logistics management and commodity planning, as well to increase their ability to manage commodities. At the end of this course, participants will be able to assess stock status, assess logistics management information systems, design inventory control systems, improve storage and warehousing conditions, advocate for logistics, and implement change in their own systems.
Quantification and Procurement Planning
To forecast, quantify, and procure any commodity requires the ability to effectively and efficiently allocate existing and future resources, as well as manage the procurement process. The goal of this course is to increase participants’ knowledge and skills in using a data driven process to—
improve the accuracy of forecasts
estimate funding requirements and identify funding sources to meet mid- to long-term needs
develop a procurement plan
evaluate and respond to environmental or policy constraints to forecasting and procurement planning.
Strengthening Enabling Environments
Increasing and sustaining client access to essential health commodities is critically dependent on country environments. Many areas of a country’s environment can either enhance or hinder the prospects for improving systems and commodity security. Therefore, this course helps participants understand how strengthening policy-level commitment, financial resources, and local capacity can help ensure an environment that enables and sustains a supply system and meets client demand.
