Training of Trainers Helps Ethiopia Move Closer to Contraceptive Security
Contraceptive Security (CS)—in 2003 it was a concept only a small number of people in Ethiopia understood. But that started to change on July 4th of that year when technical advisors from the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT and a group of Ethiopian participants finished the first Ethiopian Contraceptive Logistics System Training of Trainers at the Papyrus Hotel in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Supply Chain and Procurement Courses to be Offered in Tanzania
In October 2008, the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT will offer two logistics courses in Arusha, Tanzania: Overview Course in Supply Chain Management and Quantification and Procurement Planning. The Overview Course in Supply Chain Management will take place October 1-9, 2008 and will be followed by the Quantification and Procurement Planning course on October 13-17, 2008. Nigeria Develops Health Commodity Supply Chain Strategy
On April 16–17, in Abuja, Nigeria, the Supply Chain Management System (SCMS) and the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT sponsored a national workshop to develop a strategy for strengthening Nigeria’s health commodity supply chains. Seventy-five representatives and experts from government agencies, development partners, program implementers, and other health system stakeholders gathered to develop a comprehensive supply chain management system strategic plan that supports national health goals and program activities. Association for Public Health Logisticians Takes Root
In May 2007, the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT helped establish an association for public health logisticians working in low-resource countries: The International Association of Public Health Logisticians (IAPHL). One member describes the association as a forum for supply chain professionals to ask their peers critical questions about their current challenges. IAPHL is the first organization of its kind. Supply Chain and Procurement Courses Slated for January 2008
In January 2008, the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT will offer two logistics courses in Johannesburg, South Africa: Overview Course in Supply Chain Management and Quantification and Procurement Planning. The Overview Course in Supply Chain Management will increase participants' understanding of supply chain management and commodity planning and their abilities to manage commodities. The Quantification and Procurement Planning course will increase participants’ skills in using a data-driven process to forecast, estimate program requirements, and develop procurement plans. New Advanced Training of Trainers Course Marks the Fourth Anniversary of Contraceptive Logistics Training in Ethiopia
Eighteen to twenty million dollars of contraceptives will flow through the supply chain for the Ethiopia Ministry of Health this year. This major increase contrasts sharply with the much smaller and poorly documented quantities that were in the supply chain in July 2003, when the first contraceptive logistics system (CLS) training took place in Bahir Dar. New Papers Highlight Logistics System Improvements in Six African Countries
As part of the "Focus on Results" series, six new papers outline health logistics system improvements in Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Uganda. Each paper summarizes the results of technical assistance provided by the DELIVER project from 2000-2006 to strengthen supply chains and promote commodity security. The Supply Chain Management for Commodity Security course will be held in South Africa from April 16-May 4, 2007. This is the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT’s introductory course in logistics system design and management. The goals of the course are to increase participants' understanding of logistics management and commodity planning and to better enable them to assess and address the problems they encounter in the logistics systems they support or manage. Supply Chain Logistics Course Has Immediate Impact
"We started putting theories on the ground barely days after our arrival.....In the [quarterly logistics meeting], we agreed to integrate management of HIV test kits into the Ministry's logistics mainstream," commented course alumnus Sam Chirwa, senior logistics officer for the Malawi Ministry of Health. Two weeks after completing the course entitled Supply Chain Logistics for Commodity Security, many participants had already applied their new skills. Tanzania Works to Integrate Logistics Systems and Promote Contraceptive Security
The Tanzania Ministry of Health (MOH) is designing and will soon implement an integrated logistics system (ILS) for contraceptives, essential drugs, HIV/AIDS commodities, medical supplies, and other health commodities. DELIVER Resident Advisor Barry Chovitz is working on the design of the ILS and helping the Pharmaceutical Supply Unit of the MOH build organizational and individual capacity. (September 10, 2004)
