In 2008, Malawi piloted the distribution of DMPA to the community by Health Surveillance Assistants. This report presents lessons learned during the initial implementation from gaining stakeholder buy-in to curriculum development and the initial three months after the training and implementation roll-out. The report presents lessons learned that will be valuable for other countries considering similar community-based distribution, with particular attention paid to the supply chain implications of distributing family planning commodities to the last mile.

The mandate for the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT in Malawi has expanded to include laboratory supplies, which is a relatively new area of focus for the Malawi Ministry of Health (MOH). An assessment of Malawi’s laboratory system found that to successfully manage the logistics system for laboratory supplies, the laboratory testing services needed to be standardized for each level of the system. This publication covers the standardization of laboratory tests, techniques, and equipment.

In January and February 2009, the Ministry of Health (MOH), with technical assistance from the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT, Task Order 1, conducted an assessment of laboratory services and the management of the supply chain for laboratory commodities and equipment in government and Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) health facilities in Malawi.

A consultant team from the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT assessed the ARV and integrated essential medicines logistics systems to determine whether the antiretroviral (ARV) supply chain—of which several components are managed vertically to the Central Medical Stores (CMS) system—can be integrated into the CMS system without a loss of service.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) of Malawi is committed to establishing an integrated health logistics system, especially for products in the Essential Health Package (EHP). Over a six-year period, the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT provided technical assistance to the MOH in building an integrated logistics system, including the implementation of the reengineered logistics system; designing and implementing a new training program based on a revised set of standard operating procedures; and improving the EHP supply chain and information systems.

In March 2006, DELIVER conducted a nationally representative survey on the availability of selected health commodities at Ministry of Health (MOH) and nongovernmental organization (NGO) facilities throughout Malawi. Comparative analysis was conducted with the results from the 2004 survey and to determine any change in the health commodity logistics system over the last two years.
