On March 28, 2012, Pakistan dedicated a new and improved Central Warehouse (CWH) that will help ensure clients have access to essential health supplies when and where they need them. The USAID | DELIVER PROJECT (the project) made significant contributions to the upgrade of the CWH, which was dedicated by Dr. Andrew B. Sisson, Mission Director for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Pakistan and Dr. Shafqat Jawaid, Director General, Population Program Wing (PPW) of the Planning and Development Division of the Government of Pakistan.

The CWH serves as the main hub and distribution facility for health commodities—including contraceptives—that supply 140 districts in Pakistan. With support from USAID, the PPW increased the storage capacity of the CWH from 18,000 ft 2 to 50,000 ft. 2 The warehouse is also now equipped with better warehousing tools, enabling it to handle the growing volume of commodities needed in country.

At the dedication ceremony, Dr. Sisson commented on the importance of supply chain improvement. “The U.S. Government is committed to assisting the Government of Pakistan in improving the availability of health commodities in the country. It is also vital that we strengthen supply chain management to ensure that supplies reach the intended users.”

The USAID | DELIVER PROJECT provided technical assistance and hardware and software support to PPW to establish the CWH as a modern distribution center. The USAID-supported Community Rehabilitation Infrastructure Support Program (CRISP) also assisted in the upgrade by constructing an extension of the warehouse and rehabilitating the building’s old wing. During construction, the USAID | DELIVER PROJECT worked with the CWH to set up supply chain management systems and train staff in warehouse management.
